Located in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, an ideal location to study the environment, effective energy use, recreation, natural sciences, art and many other majors. Within one hour of two great ski areas, and right in the heart of outdoor recreation in Colorado, including mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, skiing, snowboarding, etc. Students come from across the country to study at Western. Largest majors are business, art, biology, outdoor leadership and resort management, exercise and sports science, and psychology. Western is an ideal college for students interested in the environment and for those interested in developing energy resources for the future. The college's location coupled with programs in environmental studies, petroleum geology, professional land and resource management, chemistry, biology and others offer students the chance to learn how to maximize effective energy use, develop future energy resources in an environmentally sound way, and discover sustainable energy resources such as wind and solar energy. Western offers outstanding programs in exercise and sports science and in resort management. Our location attracts the world's top extreme athletes, and Western can teach you how to help be such an athlete or how to train athletes. We also offer a unique program in resort management and business, a double major intended to prepare students to manage the business of resorts today. Recreation continues to be the largest industry in the United States, and is a growing industry in Europe, Great Britain, and across the world. Western graduates are in demand! 95% of Western students are between the ages of 18 and 23 years old, and they come to Western from all over the United States. All 50 states are represented in Western's student body. Our students tend to have strong personal initiative and to be independent in nature! To illustrate this, most high school students attend colleges with a large number of their high school classmates, and attend colleges within 100 miles of their homes. At Western, most of our freshmen are the only student from their high school, and over 90% of our students came to Western from more than 150 miles away! If you would like to have a new experience in college, to meet new people and learn from their experiences as well as yours; if you need a change from what you have been experiencing so far in high school, Western can be the place for you. Western is a moderately selective college. We generally expect students to have achieved at least a 2.5 GPA in a college preparatory curriculum in high school. Western offers very little preparatory coursework, so we expect you to have a solid academic preparation from high school, or from college if you are a transfer student.
