Finding Off Campus Housing

NOT SURE HOW TO GET STARTED?

Here are a few steps to follow and questions to ask:

1. Figure out your budget. How much do you want to pay in rent.

2. Do you want to live alone or with a roommate? Will your budget allow you to do this?

3. What type of apartment do you want to live in? Do you want to rent the second floor of a Victorian era house or do you want a modern, corporate owned apartment? What are the pros and cons of each?

4. Figure out the area that you want to live in. Take into consideration things like parking or public transportation if necessary.

5. Call the apartments and get some basic information on them. Where are they located? Is there on-site management? What utilities are included in the cost of rent?

6. Set up a time to visit the apartment before you lease if possible. You may want to view several since sometimes they look far different in person than they do on the computer!

7. After you have viewed all the apartments you are interested in you can then go back to the one that you are most interested in to follow up with a lease!

8. Ask about leasing specials! Many places won’t bargain but you can always ask.

9. Ask about student specials or good student offers. Not every place has them but they are usually worthwhile when they do!

10. Sign your lease and move in!
