Carpooling

10 Tips for Successful Carpooling:
Great if you are going to live off campus!

1. If you are planning to drive and want to find people who need a ride, the easiest way to find people who have the same schedule is to announce your plan to other people in your major who attend at the same time.

2. If you are looking for a car pool to join, the easiest way to find people who have the same schedule is to announce your plan to other people in your major who attend at the same time.

3. Determine your route and schedule. Establish pickup point(s) and designate a place(s) to meet for the trip home.

4. Draw up a schedule for driving responsibilities. If more than one member of your carpool will be driving, decide among yourselves if you want to alternate on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.

5. Establish a payment schedule. Come to an understanding on how the costs will be shared and agree on payment dates. (Example: Every Monday, every other Monday, once a month. . .)

6. Be punctual. Decide how long the driver is expected to wait. When picking someone up at their house or apartment building, do not disturb everyone in the neighborhood by honking if a rider is running a few minutes late.

7. Establish policies. Smoking or nonsmoking; music and volume; food and drinks. Your carpool will have a better chance of success if possible irritants are discussed right away. Another policy to think about is what can be discussed: it's best to keep topics like politics, religion and personal beliefs out of the carpooling conversations. It will make the ride more pleasent for everyone.

8. Make sure you have a way to contact everyone in your carpool. If a driver is ill, or will not be going to school one day, they need to let everyone know as soon as possible so that the other members can find another way to get to school. If you are sick or will not be attending school on a certain day, let your driver know that they don’t need to pick you up.

9. Let your riders know ahead of time if you will be running errands after school, so that they can make other plans if they need to be home by a certain time.

10. Drive carefully and keep your car in good repair.

Happy Carpooling!
